The theory is that humans in the world create this energy from within them. Almost every culture in the world has their own name for this energy: chi, ka, Reiki, the soul, or just plain energy. The general idea is that this energy can be sensed by disturbances caused within a person's own energy field by the energy of another person or object. In fact, this energy remains after death. According to some researchers it is literally what ghosts are made of. Traditionally this is thought to be a function of the spirit, but modern day science believes that this is the effect of the human's bioelectromagnetic field influencing the bioelectric field of something else. Modern day science believes that these fields can be observed in a variety of ways, including the traditional way of feeling with one's own body differences in temperature and the odd tingling sensation from the energy. The newer and more modern way is to use electromagnetic field meters and thermometers to pick up a person's energy. This method has even been used to monitor the energy of a ghost, (Vandendorpe, 1998).

It is important to note that the energy within a person's body does not remain stationary. It flows throughout the body with its own circulatory pattern and can even be focused through training and meditation. This pattern can be disrupted by outside events such as strong electromagnetic fields and by internal forces such as muscle fatigue or stress and can be realigned by someone trained in use of their own energy in healing. In fact, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association has accepted energy field disturbance as a diagnosis, (Carpenito, 1997). The importance of studies such as this is apparent when one looks at the application of it on medical maladies such as this. This is only a single use of psychic energy. In the future, police officers may use energy to identify a criminal, or psychologists could use it to identify the source of a mental malady such as a stress disorder

It is for this reason that I hope to show with my experiment a statistically significant result higher than the hypothesized mean of chance in favor of people's ability to distinguish which hand is producing the larger amount of energy from someone trained in the use of their personal energy.
